On the way to Lima – Stress! Strike?

Time was running fast and I decided to head towards Lima, so that I would be there in time before Elli would arrive on the 21st of December. Thus, Trujillo was only a day stop for me as I decided to take the next night bus to Huaraz directly to have some time for hiking there.

In Trujillo Simone took a different bus. First time travelling all alone on this trip. Strange and new feeling. Have to get used to it. Thanks Simone for your nice company from Vilcabamba all the way down to Trujillo. Great that we did La Balsa, Kuélap, and Gocta. Happy travels!

The morning in Trujillo I spent in a really nice Café with colonial interior and good coffee. After hanging out there for some time I decided to have a look at Chan Chan in the afternoon. Well, basically some sand walls in the desert with some decoration. I have to admit that I was not too impressed. Maybe I am just a philistine. A few minutes at the beach in Huanchaco have been included in the tour, too. However, I met Caroline and Gart, a really nice couple from the Netherlands (Netherlands again, seems to be only great people living there). And Sandy, a friendly Ecuadorian lady with her son from Lima.

Second night bus in a row. Hm, not the most funny thing. So I arrived quite washed-out in Huaraz. There, the package with Ellis Christmas present was missing. Juhu. Had to wait three hours until the next bus arrived. After several inquiries it luckily showed up. Took a cab to the Way Inn Lodge after I found a driver who knew the place. It is a beautiful lodge located high above Huaraz in the Cordillera Blanca. Beautiful spot. Perfect for day hikes and some relaxing which I was planning to do. Shortly after I arrived on the lodge I was informed that there has been a big strike and some riots in Huaraz (see Lewis blog for more) and those could break up anytime again. A strike would have meant that all roads in and out of the town are blocked by locals who are protesting against a mining project. I did not want to risk of being not in Lima when Elli would arrive there so I decided to take the night bus to Lima on the same day. Sad that I did not have some time for hiking as the Cordillera Blanca seems to be a perfect spot for this.

Arriving in Lima after three nights in busses I needed some time to relax which I did in Sandy’s hostal, where I was greeted by Sandy and her lovely son with a very warm welcome. Thanks for your friendliness and the nice note with the chocolate. Worked a bit, had a look at the city and waited for Elli, who arrived later than expected due to the snow chaos at the airport in Frankfurt.

Big big thanks to Esther who provided me in really short time with a lot of tips for my prolonged stay in Lima and would have even “organized” me some friends of her so that I would not have to spent Christmas alone if Elli would not have arrived on time. Awesome! You are still the best! Danke Lieblings-MB!

Met Caroline and Gart again and we spent a nice day strolling around in Lima. Thanks Caroline and Gart for writing me an email and your nice company! Much appreciated!
