I am often left with a big speechless surprise. Astonished by the unbelievable amount of friendliness and helpfulness of the local people. Smiling faces and waving hands wherever I look. People seem to be competing in “going the extra mile” to help me. Two examples:

I ask for an ATM. The next is 30 meters away. Just around the corner. However, the guy I have asked walks me all the way to it.

Want to get a bus to Tasik Chini. Five busses in a row. I ask which one to take. The guy does not speak English but starts to ask everybody around if one does. Mr. Lee jumps up. Walks with me to the time table. Tells me that the next bus will leave in one and a half hours. Wants to know, where exactly I want to go. Suggest that I should ask if they have a free room. I don’t have a Malaysian mobile. He just types the number in his. Nobody answers. He suggests that I should use the time for lunch. And recommends me a good place. When I come back, he had managed to reserve me a room. Tells me what to say to the bus driver, at which stop to get out and how much (and not more!) I should pay for the private transportation needed at the end. I then get his business card with the offer to give him a call whenever I face a problem while traveling Malaysia :-o
Mr. Lee: Terima kasih! Just awesome!

The unbelievable Mr. Lee.

I am not sure, if something like this would happen back in Germany. So folks back home: If you see a stranger with a question mark on his face. GO and ask if you can help. If no help is needed it just costs you a few seconds and a smile. If you can help, you will make one person feel welcome and happy. You might gain a new friend. Learn something about another culture. Either way, you’ll make this world a better place to live in!

Cheers!
Michael

I am often left with a big speechless surprise.
